Advantages of a Photodiode Detector Endoscopy System in Fluorescence-Guided Percutaneous Liver Biopsies

Image-guided liver biopsies can improve their success rate when combined with the optical detection of Indocyanine Green (ICG) fluorescence accumulated in tumors. Previous works used a camera coupled to thin borescope capture and quantify images from emission during procedures; however, light-scattering prevented formation sharp images, time response for weakly fluorescent tumors was very low. Instead, replacing photodiode detector shows an improved temporal resolution more compact lighter device. This work presents new design comparative study between both technologies, including assessment sensitivity presence background fluorescence.
